How does Netflix know if you are in the same household?
How Netflix detects devices within a Netflix Household. We use information such as IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity to determine whether a device signed into your account is part of your Netflix Household. We do not collect GPS data to try to determine the precise physical location of your devices.
The company defines a household as the group of devices that connect to the internet and watch Netflix at the same primary place. If you don't manually adjust your household settings through your account, the company now will automatically determine your household using your IP address, device IDs and account activity.
A Netflix account is meant to be shared by people who live together in one household. People who are not in your household will need to use their own account to watch Netflix. Learn more about sharing Netflix. Account owners can buy an extra member slot and invite people outside their household to use Netflix.
A Netflix Household is a collection of the devices connected to the internet at the main place you watch Netflix. A Netflix Household can be set using a TV device. All other devices that use your Netflix account on the same internet connection as this TV will automatically be part of your Netflix Household.
A Netflix account is for use by one household. Everyone living in that household can use Netflix wherever they are — at home, on the go, on holiday — and take advantage of new features like Transfer Profile and Manage Access and Devices.
While there are some methods, such as using a virtual private network (VPN) or a proxy server, that claim to allow users to access content from different regions, Netflix actively blocks such attempts and has been known to terminate accounts that violate their terms of service.
Extra members will be able to stream from any device, whether it be a smartphone, laptop, or TV. This includes while at home or traveling. But they'll only be able to stream from one device at a time, Netflix says in a help document.
So you have two options: transfer your friends and family members mooching off your account to a new membership or share your Netflix account for an additional $8 monthly fee.
Netflix will have ways of knowing if you are still sharing your account with someone outside of your household. That's because the streaming service collects a lot of data about you, including what you watch, where you watch it, the location of your home, and device IDs.
You can set or update your primary location when signed into Netflix from a TV that is connected to your home Wi-Fi network. From the Netflix home screen on a TV, press left to open the app menu. Select Get Help > Manage primary location.
How will Netflix know if I share my account?
Netflix uses a combination of IP addresses, device IDs, and “account activity from devices signed into the Netflix account” to determine if an account is being used in the primary account holder's household.
Select the option I'm Traveling. What about traveling far, far away? Netflix notes that watching outside of the country you signed up in can temporarily influence your TV and movie lineup (as some programs may be on a different service overseas).
Netflix Standard - $15.49 a month (can add one person for $7.99 a month outside the household) Netflix Premium - $19.99 a month (can add two people for $7.99 a month each outside the household)
This message means Netflix wasn't able to associate your device with your Netflix Household. If you signed in to Netflix from a device that is not part of your Netflix Household, you can create an account to fix the issue.
If you have multiple Wi-Fi networks, we may only associate one with your Netflix Household. If you want to watch Netflix on a device that is connected to a Wi-Fi network using a different ISP account or that has a different external IP address, you may be asked to verify that device as part of your Netflix Household.
Select another TV in your account's Netflix Household on the screen and tap Next. Turn on the TV you selected and open Netflix. Make sure your mobile device is connected to the same internet that your TV is connected to. Tap Next.
The country on your account can't be changed unless you move to a new one. If you have moved recently, see Moving with Netflix for details. Using a VPN to access Netflix will hide your region and only allow you to see TV shows and movies available to all regions globally.
