A gun owned by Elvis Presley was recently sold for almost $200,000 by an Illinois auction house.

Rock Island Auction Company said the “flashy” engraved Smith & Wesson Model 53 sold for $199,750 during its three-day premier auction held Aug. 25-27, 2023 that had a total of $21 million in sales.

The gun, the auction company said, was estimated to bring between $60,000 and $90,000.

“The collectibles market has been experiencing unprecedented growth in several genres,” said RIAC PresidentKevin Hogan. “When you combine two of those genres, Elvis’ memorabilia and collector firearms, the result is tremendous excitement and high totals at auction.”

The gun is “adorned with a bicentennial theme by Master Engraver Russell Smith” and was delivered to Presley just months before he died on Aug. 16, 1977.

Rock Island Auction said in 2017 it sold a Colt Python belonging to Presley for $172,500 and his Smith & Wesson Model 19-2 for$195,500.

The auction house said the sales demonstrate “the value of guns linked to historic figures and pop culture icons in the current collectibles market.” In 2022, Rock Island Auction said it sold theonly surviving blaster originally used byHarrison FordasHan Soloin “Star Wars: A New Hope” for$1,057,500, and the previous year the auction house solda revolver owned byJohn Wayneand seen in some of the star’s feature films for$517,500.

Presley was born on Jan. 8, 1935, with his twin brother, who was stillborn. He died on Aug. 16, 1977, before he was scheduled to perform at Hersheypark Arena on Sept. 25, 1977.

His only child, Lisa Marie Presley, died on Jan. 12 of this year from a bowel obstruction. One of Lisa Marie’s children, Benjamin Keough, killed himself on July 12, 2020.
