Muted greens from the sage family are one of my favorite colors to use throughout my home. Evergreen Fog (SW 9103) has been rising in popularity over the last few years and was even chosen as Sherwin Williams 2022 Color of the Year.
Color Psychology
Green is often associated with nature, growth, and harmony. It is known to have a soothing effect on our minds, promoting a sense of balance and stability.
Gray, on the other hand, adds a touch of elegance and sophistication, creating a serene ambiance. The combination of these two colors in Evergreen Fog creates a harmonious blend that brings a sense of tranquility to any space.
Colors with more gray undertones and lower LRVs take on a “muddy” or desaturated look that works great as a neutral color in a design.
What is the Light Reflective Value (LRV)?
The LRV for Evergreen Fog is 30.
As a reminder, LRV tells us how much light a color absorbs on a scale from 0 to 100. The lower the number, the less light the color will reflect and will therefore feel darker. The higher the LRV number, the more reflective the color, making a space feel lighter and brighter.
Is Evergreen Fog gray or green?
This chameleon color is both green and gray, depending on the time of day and lighting!
The more natural sunlight in a room, the warmer the color will look and more green will show through. In a room with minimal sunlight and lighting, Evergreen Fog will appear more gray.
We used Evergreen Fog on the door to the shed in our backyard where it is bathed in sunlight for more of the day. I also used it on the walls in our foyer with less natural sunlight (facing north). It doesn’t even look like the same color when you compare the shed door to the entryway walls. Lighting is so important when choosing a paint color!

What trim color goes with Evergreen Fog?
For a more classic and traditional feel, shades of white and cream are a great option. For our garden shed, I chose my colors to coordinate with our traditional style home and Ethereal White looks beautiful.
Another option is to paint the trim the same color as the wall but in a different sheen. If the walls are Evergreen Fog in an eggshell sheen, use the same color on the trim in a satin sheen.

Where can I use Evergreen Fog in my home?
One of the remarkable qualities of Sherwin Williams Evergreen Fog is its versatility. It can be used in a variety of spaces, from bedrooms to living rooms, kitchens, mudrooms, and more.
While I did not use Evergreen Fog for our mudroom, I did choose a similar color from the sage green family. The vertical panels are painted Svelte Sage by Sherwin Williams and I love how it looks next to the botanical print wallpaper above.

In bedrooms, Evergreen Fog can create a serene and peaceful atmosphere that is perfect for rest and relaxation.
I am biased, Evergreen Fog looks stunning in our entryway welcoming all of our guests. It sets the tone for the rest of the house and gives a little drama without feeling too bold.
