Brats (2024)

Andrew McCarthy’s documentary examines the Brat Pack, the group of teen actors who began to take over Hollywood in the 1980s. But when a New York Magazine cover story dubs them the Brat Pack in 1985, Emilio Estevez, Jon Cryer, Lea Thompson, Rob Lowe, Ally Sheedy, and Demi Moore soon find themselves losing control over their careers and their lives. Nearly 40 years later, McCarthy reconnects the various members of the Brat Pack to reflect on their legacies together.

The Promised Land (2023)

Mads Mikkelsen stars in the Danish film The Promised Land, which is about an impoverished military officer who sets out on a desperate mission in 1755. The near-destitute Captain Ludvig Kahlen (Mikkelsen) ventures into what’s considered uninhabitable land to cultivate valuable crops and build a colony for the King in exchange for a royal name for himself. The merciless Frederik de Schinkel (Simon Bennebjerg), however, believes the territory belongs solely to him. So when he learns that a couple formerly in his employ has escaped and taken refuge with Kahlen, de Schinkel swears vengeance, setting off a battle between two desperate, headstrong men.

The First Omen (2024)

The sixth film in The Omen franchise, The First Omen is a prequel to the 1976 original film starring Nell Tiger Free as Margaret, a young American woman sent to Rome to live a life in service of the church. There, she encounters a horrifying evil that forces her to question her own faith and discovers a conspiracy to bring about the birth of evil incarnate. While it may sound like a cheesy horror prequel, The First Omen received great reviews when it was released this past spring, and is due for rediscovery on streaming.

Ferrari (2023)

Heat director Michael Mann’s snapshot of the life of Enzo Ferrari zooms in on the summer of 1957. With his company on the brink of bankruptcy and his marriage to his wife, Laura (Penélope Cruz), on the rocks, Enzo Ferrari (Adam Driver) decides to roll the dice on one race. Pushing all his chips in, he stakes his company’s future on the iconic Mille Miglia race across Italy.

Monkey Man (2024)

Dev Patel directs and stars in Monkey Man, a modern adaptation of the legend of Hanuman. Patel plays Kid, an anonymous young man who makes a meager living by donning a gorilla mask and being beaten to a pulp by more popular fighters in an underground fight club. As the rage and childhood trauma builds, Kid soon finds a way to infiltrate the city’s sinister elite and sets out on a murderous vengeance campaign.

Housekeeping for Beginners (2024)

From celebrated Australian director Goran Stolevski, Housekeeping for Beginners tells the story of Dita (Anamaria Marinca), a woman who never wanted to be a mother, yet finds herself compelled to raise her girlfriends’ two daughters. Mia is a pint-sized troublemaker, Vanesa is a rebellious teenager, and all three are remarkably strong-willed and stubborn. Nonetheless, Dita must find the strength to keep this unlikely family together.

The American Society of Magical Negroes (2024)

I Saw the TV Glow‘s Justice Smith stars in this satire as Aren, a young man recruited into a secret society of magical Black people who have dedicated their lives to making white people’s lives easier. If you like a satire that isn’t afraid to punch hard on race, this might be up your alley.

Exhuma (2024)

Renowned shaman Choi Min-sik (Kim Go-Eun) and his protégé (Lee Do-hyun) are hired by a wealthy, enigmatic family to investigate the cause of a supernatural illness affecting only the first-born children of each generation. Tracing the affliction’s origin to a long-hidden family grave on sacred ground, they sense an ominous aura but opt to exhume and relocate the ancestral remains anyway. What emerges, however, is much darker and sinister.

Stopmotion (2024)

After the loss of her overbearing mother, stop-motion animator Ella Blake (Aisling Franciosi) struggles to keep her demons at bay. To help, she begins creating a new film that soon becomes a battleground for her sanity. So when Ella’s mind begins to fracture, the characters in her fantastical project take on their own lives and stories that threaten to untether Ella from reality.

Hit Man (2024)

Richard Linklater directs Hit Man, an entertaining romantic romp inspired by the true story of Gary Johnson, a mild-mannered professor who moonlighted as a fake hit man. Johnson (Top Gun: Maverick‘s Glen Powell) makes a life as a fake hit man for law enforcement, but when he meets new client Maddy Masters (Adria Arjona), he falls hard. Soon, Johnson’s feelings spark a chain reaction of deception and trouble.

Atlas (2024)

Jennifer Lopez stars in the sci-fi action flick Atlasas Atlas Shepherd, a brilliant data analyst with a deep distrust of both artificial intelligence and humanity. When a robot with whom she has a past goes renegade, Atlas joins the team to capture it. But when things go awry, she’ll have to learn to trust AI to have any hope of saving humanity.

Madame Web (2024)

Madame Web has the ignominious distinction of being Marvel’s (technically Sony, but it’s a Marvel product) worst-reviewed movie ever. Nonetheless, it’s Marvel, so it makes this list. When Manhattan paramedic Cassandra Webb (Dakota Johnson) is forced to confront her past, she discovers she may have clairvoyant abilities, leading her to join forces with three young women whose destinies appear intertwined. It’s probably best to watch this movie with a “so-bad-its-entertaining” frame of mind.

The Book of Clarence (2024)

A bit of a chip off Monty Python’s The Life of Brian,The Book of Clarence finds streetwise Clarence (LaKeith Stanfield) struggling to free himself of debt and build a better life for his family. When he becomes captivated by the power of the rising Messiah and His apostles, Clarence decides to carve his own way into divinity.

Rather (2023)

At 92, Dan Rather is still one of media’s most iconic and recognizable names. Despite stepping away from CBS after the botched report on then-President George Bush’s military service, Rather has found new life as a social media watchdog and journalistic critic. This documentary chronicles Rather through the decades, from Civil Rights reporter to nightly news anchor to comeback king in the digital age.

Am I OK? (2024)

Dakota Johnson and Sonoya Mizuno star in this romantic dramedy about best friends. Lucy (Johnson) and Jane (Mizuno) know pretty much everything about one another and spend almost all of their free time together. But when Jane is promoted and asked to move to London, Lucy finally confesses her most closely held secret that she’s only now coming to terms with: She’s a lesbian. Both women are suddenly at a severe crossroads and need the support of the other. Will they both be OK?

Dune: Part Two (2024)

Easily 2024’s most commercially successful film, Dune: Part Two is also a critical hit that captivated audiences all over the world with its jaw-dropping sets and immersive worldbuilding. Picking up after Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) has fled his family’s home and joined the desert Fremen to avoid being killed by the Harkonnens, the film follows Paul’s seemingly predestined path toward an extraordinarily violent vengeance. Caught between his love for Chani (Challengersstar Zendaya) and his role in the fate of the universe, Paul fights to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee, while trying to stave off another terrible one of which he is the author.

The Iron Claw (2023)

The Iron Clawwas prominent on the list of the many Oscar snubs this year. It’s the true story of the Von Erich brothers, the insanely competitive family that captivated the world of professional wrestling in the early 1980s. Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson, and Stanley Simons star as the four brothers who grew up with a domineering father (Holt McCallany). The film follows them through triumph and, ultimately, tragedy.

Stop Making Sense (1984)

Considered one of the best concert films ever made, Jonathan Demme’s Stop Making Sense has been remastered for streaming release on Max. Demme’s film depicts a Talking Heads concert at the height of their popularity, touring for their 1983 album Speaking in Tongues. The remarkably cinematic performance is filled with guest performances, creative choreography, and captivating visuals that helped change ideas of what concerts could be.

The Zone of Interest (2023)

Winner of Best International Film at the 2024 Oscars, The Zone of Interest is one of the best movies of 2023. The film examines the efforts of Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss and his wife Hedwig to build an idyllic little dream home directly next to the camp. The stark contrast between the life of their garden and the genocidal mayhem happening next door is just the start of the deep discomfort of this drama.

Jim Henson Idea Man (2024)

Jim Henson is history’s most renowned and beloved puppeteer, and this Ron Howard-directed documentary delves deep into the mind of the creative visionary. From Henson’s early days of puppeteering on local TV to Sesame Street, The Muppet Show, and beyond,Jim Henson Idea Man uses Henson’s personal archives for an insightful look into the mind of a complex, deeply imaginative man.

The Beach Boys (2024)

Frank Marshall directs this Disney+ original documentary about the legendary band and their iconic sound. From humble family beginnings to superstardom, The Beach Boys uses never-before-seen archival footage and new interviews with Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, David Marks, Bruce Johnston, and other music business luminaries to tell the story of this band that continues to captivate listeners to this day. God only knows why you’d pass up watching this entertaining docuseries about one of America’s greatest bands.

Wish (2023)

Widely panned as one of Disney’s laziest efforts in years, Wish is nonetheless the most significant release of the last year from Disney Animation Studios, so it makes this list. Young idealist Asha (Ariana DeBose) makes a wish so powerful that it’s actually answered by a little ball of energy called Star. Armed with this new power and friendship, Asha and Star must confront King Magnifico (star Chris Pine) to save Asha’s kingdom from doom.

The Idea of You (2024)

The hot new romantic comedy on the streamers, The Idea of You stars Anne Hathaway (Eileen) as Solène, a 40-year-old single mother chaperoning her teenage daughter’s trip to Coachella. But when she meets 24-year-old Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), the leader singer of the planet’s hottest boy band, an unexpected and very real semi-intergenerational relationship emerges.

Road House (2024)

Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor McGregor square off in the Prime Original remake of the Patrick Swayze cult classic, Road House. Gyllenhaal plays Dalton, an ex-UFC fighter trying to escape his dark past and violent reputation. When he’s spotted by Frankie (Jessica Williams), the owner of a notoriously dangerous and rowdy roadhouse in the Florida Keys, she brings him in to help defend her business from a violent gang set on destroying her bar at the command of crime boss Brandt (Billy Magnussen). Dalton makes quick work of Brandy’s five-man crew, but when Brandt calls in a gun-for-hire, Knox (McGregor), the stakes and bloodshed ratchet up.

Frida (2024)

This powerful Amazon original documentary dives deep into the life, mind, and heart of iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. Using her own words drawn from her diary, letters, essays, and print interviews, Frida is a magical documentary, brought to life by lyrical animation inspired by her artwork.

Ricky Stanicky (2024)

Childhood best friends Dean, JT, and Wes (Zac Efron, Andrew Santino, and Jermaine Fowler) loved to get into trouble as kids, and they always blamed it on the imaginary Ricky Stanicky. Twenty years later, they’re still invoking Ricky when they get up to no good. But when their spouses and partners finally get suspicious, they demand to meet Ricky. So, the gang hires washed-up actor and celebrity impersonator “Rock Hard” Rod (John Cena) to portray the fabled friend. But when Rod takes the role too far, the boys begin to wish they didn’t invent Ricky at all.

Despite making quick friends with outcasts Janis (Auli’i Cravalho) and Damian (Jaquel Spivey), she’s soon lured into “The Plastics,” the top tier of the social hierarchy, ruled by conniving queen bee Regina George (Reneé Rapp). Caught between wanting to take down the cruel queen and a desire to become the queen herself, Cady must navigate the high school gauntlet and try to remain true to herself.

Argylle (2024)

Firmly embedded in the stylistic vein of Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman franchise, Argylle feels almost like a spinoff. However, it features all new characters as we meet Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard), the reclusive author of a bestselling series of spy novels starring secret agent Argylle (The Witcher‘s Henry Cavill). Conway leads the exact opposite life of Argylle, but when the plots of her fictional books begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-world spy organization, Conway is roped into the center of the action to help take down an evil spy syndicate.

Girls State (2024)

This original Apple documentary chronicles an ambitious, immersive experiment in Missouri tasking teenage girls with building a government from the ground up. Asking what American democracy would look like in the hands of teenage girls, the team gathered female leaders from very different backgrounds and placed them together with the task of building a country. The results are interesting, to say the least.
